Sweater Weather

SWEATER WEATHER by the neighbourhood

is the soundtrack to my life lately, I can’t stop listening to it! Check out the inspiration for this post here. Maybe because it is most certainly sweater weather here in Calgary, maybe just because its an awesome track, either way it makes me happy.

winter fashion, boots, vest, sweater dress

This sweater is one of my favourites to dress up and down, yesterday I was fancy, today I went more casual layering a green tank dress underneath (here) grey boots (here) with a leather jacket (here) and a fur trimmed vest layered over top. I bought the vest from le chateau last year when fur vests were all the rage, I like a little fur, but its a difficult trend to embrace without looking 20lbs heavier or like a gangsta rap maven, so rather than go for a fully fur vest I compromised with this cable knit vest trimmed with fur and lace, its one of my favourite layering pieces! You will be twice as warm and twice as cute with a vest over a jacket!

keep warm this weekend!

5.  PRINTED LEGGINGS

cute, comfortable and warm!  pairs perfectly with a solid colored sweater for those chilly morning classes. If you aren’t comfortable ordering online, Aritzia carries the most adorable TNA pair.

4. STRIPED SWEATER

Look for one with cashmere or angora and a relaxed fit- you want it to drape loosely over the body. You might have to try a few lemons before you find the right sweater, but its value as a layering piece makes it worth it! I love this option from Victoria’s Secret- they have reasonable shipping and a great return policy!

3.   FUR SNOOD

An easy layering piece that keeps you warm, doubles as a scarf and a hood (resulting in possibly the dumbest name ever, the snood) and is perfect to instantly at interest to any outfit. Shop vintage for real fur, or hit the mall for a faux option- mine is from le chateau.

2. PARTY SKIRT

All those holiday parties and events can be costly, and God forbid you show up in the same dress as someone else! Avoid embarrassment and save money by finding a cute party skirt and pairing it with a blouse you already own, rather than shelling out for a new dress! A skirt with volume (pleats, peplum, a-line) worn at the natural waist (the smallest part of your mid-section) will flatter and hide any turkey bloat!

1. Dress Jacket

Every woman needs to invest in a wool melton jacket, this is a piece that will last  you for years, so shop carefully and be willing to spend for higher quality- you’ll save money down the road. Consider the climate in your area, if it goes much below freezing then make sure the jacket has wool in it, this natural fiber is super strong, insulating and naturally water repellent. Cashmere or angora will often be blended with wool for softness, the higher percentage of cashmere, the softer it will be! Always before you buy check the inside fabric label for material and care information.  Don’t buy it too tight, make sure you have freedom of movement in the arms (ask yourself, could you drive easily while wearing it?) and that it doesn’t pull across the bust, bum or stomach. You should have room to wear a thick sweater or blazer underneath, these coats are much warmer with layers of knits underneath! Remember to check for quality in the tailoring; the buttons firmly affixed, seams are not crooked or loose, jacket is lined, structured and fitted nicely to the natural contours of the body.  Remember that the more of your body you have covered, the warmer you will be (it seems obvious, but its easy to get caught up looking for fashion over function) try a jacket that hits a few inches above the knee.  Details like belts, peplum and pleating around the waist will give you shape, and a jacket with a tie belt can be instantly updated by swapping it out for a statement belt of your own. Black goes with everything, so if you don’t have a black jacket yet, then get one! If you already have a black coat, then stand out in the shades of grey this winter by wearing a pop of color! If you buy a color that you love, you will wear the jacket for years, so don’t be afraid of buying any color your heart desires! Navy, olive, off white, eggplant and red are all great options.

The Basics Every Woman Needs

The Basics Every Woman Needs

As much fun as experimenting with all the latest trends is, these are the pieces every woman needs in her closet.

Invest in these 5 Basics:

5. red pumps

4. white blouse

3. mid-sized leather bag

2. dark wash boot-cut jeans

1. tailored black blazer

Pair these together for a fool proof outfit that looks right every time. When you’re shopping for these must-have’s take your time, try on lots, and don’t buy until you find find truly great pieces.

*

Remember these tips while you shop:

#5 – Red Leather Pumps

Look for genuine leather shoes (they’ll last so much longer) with a heel height you find manageable. I personally feel that slipping on red heels makes me feel instantly sexier, try it yourself! How do you know its leather? Look for the label, usually on the bottom or inside. It will show one of the following symbols for UPPER, LINER, SOLE.

#4 – White Poplin Blouse

When shopping for a blouse fit and material is essential. Look for something luxe like silk, besides being soft and durable its a natural fabric that has thermostatic properties, meaning it will keep you warm in winter and cool in summer. Its hypoallergenic and highly absorbent, meaning you’ll be comfortable. Make sure the blouse fits your shoulders (test this by raising your arms, if it pinches, its too tight) and doesn’t pull across the chest.  Busty girls, buy some double-sided tape, this way if your buttons gape open a bit you can stick some in there to keep it closed. Avoid Polyester at all costs, where-ever possible I like to choose natural fabrics. All clothing should have a label inside listing the material, country of origin and care instructions. Always check this label before you buy. Keep in mind many things may read “Dry Clean Only” but often you can get away with washing them in cold on the delicate cycle and hanging them to dry. When in doubt, Google!

#3 Mid-Sized Bag

Here is where you can have the most freedom, find a bag that suits your style. Again, genuine leather is your friend (unless you’re a vegan!) because it will last so much longer. Inspect the bag for quality; are the seams sewn straight, is there glue visible, paint that could flake off? Interesting detailing like quilting, studs, chains, will give your bag personality. Choose a neutral color (black, grey, brown or beige) and this will be wearable forever.  However you don’t want to play it safe buy a color you LOVE (I seem to always be buying teal) a punchy bag can add color and personality to an otherwise demure look. Find something that’s big enough to be practical, but small enough to take out. (About the size of a brick.)

#2 Dark Bootcut Denim

Jean shopping can be an absolute nightmare, no one knows your body better than you so dress for your shape. It might be a pain but everyone needs a great pair of boot-cut jeans so invest the time to go try on a large selection. Buy these a bit long and pair them with heels to make your legs look miles long. Look for jeans with a bit of stretch (check the care label for spandex) in a dark wash, and remember that fit in the waist is much more important than length. The hem should hit just at the top of your foot when you’re wearing heels.  Paying to get your jeans hemmed will make a huge difference- keeping you looking tailored and presentable- too long or too short and you’ll look ridiculous. More great tips here.

#1 Black Blazer

The black blazer is the single most important piece you can shop for. It adds instant polish to any outfit and will never go out of style. A single breasted, single button style looks good on EVERYONE. If you are very busty try a style with a waterfall front and no buttons. Make sure it fits in the shoulders and doesn’t pull across the back or at the buttons. Test the mobility you have in your arms; if you couldn’t drive while wearing it then keep looking. 3/4 length sleeves are flattering and functional. Don’t be hesitant to pay more for quality materials, like wool, and dry clean your blazers to keep the shape.

Always remember to buy for the fit you are and not for the size you want to fit. When you’re shopping don’t become depressed about having to go up a size- no one knows what the size label says but everyone can see if you’ve smushed yourself into something too small. Different stores vary so much in their (vanity) sizing that its unlikely you’ll ever be able to say with certainty what size you wear. Still hung up on that ‘medium’ label when you’re sure you should be ‘small’ ? Just cut it out! Literally (and figuratively, you’re beautiful as you are) take scissors and get rid of it. I have clothes from sizes XXS-XXL in my closet, but I’ve  cut out almost all the tags (mostly because they’re itchy) but also because my body image isn’t defined by the size label!

menswear madness!

A menswear inspired business casual look is one of my favourite styles to wear, especially for summer because I love wearing shorts with a blazer!!

The key to getting this look right is to keep the feminine details,  and make sure your pieces FIT properly, not too tight or too loose and keep an eye on your proportions! Keep in mind its only menswear inspired, you aren’t dressing up in drag!

*

Here are a few of my favourite celeb menswear inspired looks:

kate mara

emma stone

ashley green

ginnifer goodwin

anne hathaway

alexa chung, goddess of the menswear look.

*

Tips on getting it right:

1. Stick to neutral pieces..
then add color with accessories or makeup. I love a red lip with a menswear inspired outfit.
2. Don’t over-accessorize..
carry only a small classic bag, wear stud earrings, a bold ring, cuff bangle or a watch.
3. Emphasize your waist!
with a belt (like emma),  a corset (like ashley) or high-waist bottoms (like ginnifer or alexa)
4. Wear dark colors on the bottom..
black, navy, brown or grey will slim visually, while white widens, it also shows wrinkles more.
5. Wear heels!!
Unless you are long and lean like the lovely Alexa up there, wear a heel! Choose something that doesn’t cut off at the ankle I love a pointy toe as it elongates the leg more (Ginnifer,  ilu.. but those shoes are not right,  Kate Mara’s shoe choice is bang on)
6. Mix structure, with softness..
Alexa gets the look perfect with a great structured pair of shorts, paired with a silky light button down and a blazer that fits just right.
7. Do print properly, or not at all..
Kate’s sheer blouse and polka dot blazer add a feminine twist to the masculine trend, while Anne’s graphic tee is too casual. Had she pushed up the sleeves of her blazer and worn the shirt half-tucked she could maybe have gotten away with the casual look, but the long sleeves and the wrinkly suit are her undoing.

*

And my way of wearing the menswear trend:

My thought process:  The shorts are highwaisted, have pleating (to add structure and femininity) and are slimming being black. The shirt is silk, loosely draped and bright white, plus the scoop neck makes it more girly. Wearing solid black and white pieces is totally reminiscent of a tux, keep it polished by tucking in the blouse and when shopping for high-waist pieces make sure they hit on the narrowest part of your waist. Next I chose a  grey snakeskin belt to add a little polish and a little print (and it keeps the shorts sitting where they should be) without being overwhelming. Grey stilettos to elongate the legs in a neutral color to match the belt,  without being too overly matchy.  (I have shoes with the same snakeskin print too and that was a tempting choice.) I picked a  long grey cashmere sweater, because it was cold, and I wasn’t in the mood for a blazer. Then I wore very minimal accessories.. (a bangle- which broke to my great dismay and small turquoise drop earrings) and I carried my every day purse which I have been obsessed with since I got it months ago. I’m carrying it here:
